Applications in environment and nature

From preventive hazard assessment to securing evidence after natural events, we deliver high-precision data for environmental agencies, forestry offices and engineering firms.

Survey drone in flight above a hazy Alpine valley

Event documentation and damage analysis

After landslides, debris flows or rockfalls we capture the affected area quickly with drones or helicopter systems. High-resolution orthophotos and difference models quantify the volumes of material lost and deposited and document changes in position completely.

Digital terrain model of the Tamins region in elevation colours with hillshading

Hazard maps and process simulations

High-precision digital terrain and surface models form the reliable geometric basis for 2D simulations of floods, rockfall and avalanche paths. Flights repeated over time make creeping movements on slopes and morphological shifts along banks quantifiable to the centimetre.

Classified point cloud with vegetation, ground, buildings and power lines in their own colours

Terrain models and forest structure analysis

With airborne LiDAR we penetrate dense stands through multiple echoes and model the real ground relief reliably. The classified point clouds cleanly separate ground, undergrowth and canopy, so that stand heights, biomass and canopy cover can be determined.

Vegetation vitality and forest condition monitoring

Calibrated multispectral images record reflectance in the near infrared and reveal drought stress, loss of vitality and pest infestation at an early stage. The calculated indices give forestry offices and agronomists a sound basis for targeted care measures and for mapping damaged timber.

The Rhine Gorge from the air, with the Rhine looping between gravel banks, forest and pale rock faces

Protected areas and renaturation sites

High-resolution true orthophotos and calibrated colour infrared images record the dynamics of vegetation in mires, floodplains and renaturation areas. Repeat flights make ecological succession and the widening of watercourses quantifiable over the years.

Why Geotrend

What you can expect from us

At home in the mountains

With our locations in Kriens and Chur we know steep terrain and narrow valleys. Our terrain-following flight planning secures an evenly high resolution even on steep slopes.

Drone and helicopter

We capture small perimeters flexibly by drone and wide valleys efficiently by helicopter. This way we choose the most economical platform for every project.

Terrain models under forest

LiDAR penetrates a dense canopy reliably down to the ground. You receive dependable terrain models even in heavily wooded terrain.

Purely the data

We deliver independently checked geodata with a detailed proof of accuracy. The specialist interpretation remains entirely with your experts.

Frequently asked questions

Are drone flights permitted in protected areas?

In federal water bird and migratory bird reserves and in cantonal wildlife zones, flying is prohibited in principle. For research, monitoring and protection forest projects, however, the responsible authorities can grant exceptions with good reason. We take care of the entire approval procedure with the authorities in advance.

Can the ground relief be captured under dense forest?

With LiDAR we capture the real ground surface even under a canopy. The laser pulses pass through small gaps in the vegetation and provide reliable multiple echoes for high-precision digital terrain models (DTM). Unlike pure photogrammetry, ground points are reconstructed reliably even in heavily overgrown terrain.

Do you also take on the specialist interpretation of the data?

We deliver independently checked primary data, normalised elevation models, difference rasters and calculated vegetation indices. The interpretation for hazard maps, forest condition or agricultural crops remains with your responsible experts. On request we involve your specialists directly in setting the target parameters.

Are swisstopo data sufficient for a hazard assessment?

Datasets such as swissALTI3D and swissSURFACE3D are suitable for large-scale overviews, but they follow update cycles of several years. After a specific natural event or for hydraulic 2D hazard simulations, planning requires data from a given date with a high point density. A flight commissioned for the project delivers the centimetre accuracy needed to determine volumes and deformation exactly.

How quickly can you fly after a debris flow or rockfall?

After an event we plan the mission at short notice and fly as soon as weather, safety on site and the necessary permits allow, by drone for individual slopes and channels or by helicopter for larger areas. The orthophoto shows the release area and the deposits. The difference model against an earlier elevation model, for example swissALTI3D or one of our own earlier surveys, shows the volume that has moved.
